About Chapter 1009
Our Chapter 1009 currently focuses our resources, time, and energy on having raffles to raise money for scholarships to award to High School Seniors who qualify to help with their continuing education. We also assist the Angels of Corsicana group in sending packages to troops all over the world and especially in Afghanistan. The packages contain items such as new white socks, batteries, small toilet articles, cards, books, snacks, etc. These items are sent every month and are greatly needed and appreciated by the troops. At Christmas, the packages always contain a little extra. Last year the postage alone cost over $5000. So any and all donations for supplies and postage are greatly appreciated.
The chapter purchased and now place over 1,700 flags on Veteran’s graves for Veterans Day annually. Members provide rides to the VA Hospitals for veterans who need them.
Some of the things Chapter 1009 has helped the community with in the past are donating to local Volunteer Fire Departments, funds to Hope House, and the Food Pantry. Funds were donated to support Cub Scout Pack 253’s award program and flags were purchased for the Corsicana High School ROTC program. Many years the chapter has been able to give funds to support local Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Girl Scout, and ROTC groups. And many years some of them have volunteered to help us put out flags.
Before the National Guard was deployed, Chapter 1009 members and their spouses looked forward every year to cooking and serving a home cooked Christmas Dinner to the soldiers and their families.
The chapter has been fortunate in the past to purchase materials and build a ramp for a disabled veteran. The chapter has provided men to help build several ramps for veterans in the area where the materials were provided by a state organization. The chapter has also been fortunate to receive a couple of donated electric wheelchairs. New batteries were purchased for the wheelchairs and then they were donated to veterans in need.
We consider ourselves blessed by God to have made it home from Vietnam and our duty to help other veterans in need and to support needs in our community.
